A bit like Rishi Sunak’s wife has many properties in many countries, Mhairi has her spirtual homes all over the world. One of those is definitley in Bled. We fell in love with this place when we visited back in 2017 and we promised ourselves we’d return when we could.

Part of the attraction is the beauty of the lake itself which is a joy to walk around. At only 6 kilometres, just like a good kilt, it is long enough to cover all the essentials but short enough to keep things interesting. The paths are so well maintained that you can safely look around you as you go and there is even a short stretch of boardwalk right beside the glacial water so you almost feel like you’re walking on the lake.

Then there are the attractive features dotted around the shoreline – the imposing castle, the intricate roof on the main church, the grandstand for the annual rowing regatta, the cute little town and the swimming spots.

We found the water was surprisingly mild given that it had come from the nearby mountains. The spot we chose to swim was about two thirds round the lake and boy did that water feel good after 4 km in 29 degree heat! We got to use our water shoes again, which drew some curious glances from people clearly more used to pebble beaches than we were. There were even toddlers calmly walking around on jagged gravel looking at us as though we were aliens. We didn’t care as it saved us doing the “Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” dance down into the lake.
But the Henrik Larsson of this particular team is the island in the middle of the lake. The last time we were here, we didn’t go out to it as it was the at the end of that particular holiday and we were probably skint by then. This time we jumped in a “pletna”, a wooden boat powered by one bloke and a couple of oars. By the time he got us to the island, he needed a 45 minute break so we had time for a wander about. As an aside, it was only 18 euros each for the trip. Definitely worth it!

Meadhbh and Jamie had the most fantastic wedding in Ayshire but, at one point, Mhairi had tried to talk them into Bled for their wedding as the situation is so spectatcular. Totally impractical, of course, as there’d be no guests and the church hire is wildly expensive – even Rishi Sunak’s missus mght have to sell a property or two to pay for it!

We did a bit of travelling around while in Bled and we’ll do a separate post about that soon. Hopefully you’re enjoying the blog so please add a like or a comment and share with anyone who might be interested. 😊
