Hooray for Holyrood!

Hooray for Holyrood!

It’s Royal Week here in Edinburgh, shortened to just two days because of the general election. Although we live virtually next door to Holyrood, our royal neighbours had never visited us and we thought we’d make an effort and call round on them before we head off on our adventures.

We’d been told that they like to dress up so we did too. The Royal Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse has been established tradition since 1926. By comparison, Mhairi wearing a hat is as rare as a sighting of a wild haggis.

The weather was dry, which was a relief but, unfortunately, so was the bar. To be fair, the authorities probably made a sensible decision there.

The food was surprisingly tasty: carefully trimmed, finger-sized sandwiches and lots of scrumptious sweet things. Mhairi wouldn’t let me sneak off to take a picture of the, presumably, mountain of discarded bread crusts I suspected were hidden round the back of the catering tents.

The king and queen made their ceremonial entrance from the top of their stairs and paused while they played his song. Somewhat subversively, the band then immediately launched into a medley of Hollywood musical classics, starting with “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, which raised a smile for the republicans amongst us.

We thoroughly enjoyed the event and are really grateful for the thoughtful gesture from Sara and Rajendra in arranging the invite.

How fun! What a perfectly wonderful start to your adventures! You both look great and it appears you had a great time despite the “dryness” of the afternoon 🤣. I’m sure glad to see Gerry’s kilt made it in on the rucksack packing list!

Thankfully the kilt was just hired for the day, Heidi. There’s barely enough room for another pair of socks in the backpacks, never mind a full kilt! 🤣🤣 He does suit it though. xx

Thanks Jill. Hope you all had a fantastic holiday! We’ve arrived in Heathrow and are enjoying a cheeky wee Angry Orchard in the ‘Spoons before our next flight. 😁
